Sitting at a desk for hours every day can be taxing on both the brain and the body. From back pain to brain fog, a day at work can cause damage that adds up! We get it, finding time to carve out for exercise when you’re working all day can feel impossible. However, the solution doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Try starting with just a few easy to implement tips that can get you moving and break up the monotony of a sedentary day.
Below are 3 easy tips to incorporate into your typical day at the office.
The benefits of implementing these tips are actually twofold; not only will they keep you more active, but they will also improve your concentration and energy levels throughout the day.
1.- Use the stairs
While you may not be going up and down all day long, you likely have opportunities during the day to choose between stairs or an elevator. Challenge yourself to take the stairs at every opportunity. It’s a small choice that can stack up benefits over time. Perhaps you even have the option to use a washroom on a different floor? If so, bathroom breaks can be a great regular opportunity to crush a few stairs and bump up the heart rate a little!
2.- Opt for an exercise ball chair.
Replace your desk chair with a balance ball. Sitting on an exercise ball requires us to connect with our core, in contrast to sitting on a seat. Balance balls are an extraordinary method to help improve your posture as well. The ball will also likely require you to stand up more often to give your core a break, which is also a good habit. There’s a reason why your apple watch suggests it all the time!
3.- Throw in random push-ups.
You can use the edge of your desk as an easier-to-accomplish inclined push-up variation, or simply hit the floor if regular push-ups are more your speed. This may seem like an odd suggestion, but many of you likely already know people who do this. Not only are push-ups a great full-body exercise, but they are a great, fast way to burn off any frustration or brain fog and can be done anywhere. Try throwing them in when you have been sitting or focused for an extended period and simply go until failure. Then get back to work and do it again later.
